"I Am Just a Waitress She Said..."

Today, I thought I'd share one of my favorite live recordings of Underworld.

If you don't know much about them... they've always been sort of considered to be "the Pink Floyd" or "the Radiohead of techno music" (as a side note, Thom Yorke has been quoted as saying that UW were heavy influences on the band - especially, I'd say so on Kid A recordings like "Everything In Its Right Place" and "Idioteque".) Click here to see their Wiki article.

Until recently, Underworld were known for playing heavily improvised shows - so no show was like another; songs could be extended out to massive lengths, some songs were tested out before their 'official' release while others were pretty much improvised on the spot.

This recording from 10/31/98 - Hugo d.Nite, A-Hoy, Rotterdam, Netherlands is also especially cool because of the songs that they played. It (like much of the '98 tour) is particularly HEAVY on improvisations, contains the unreleased song "Five Points", and has an early version of "Push Upstairs" (which showed up on their 1999 album "Beaucoup Fish")

Underworld's 1998 tour was primarily to 'work out' their new songs before they were finished for the "Beaucoup Fish."

Set List:
  1. Dark Train / Nu Train
  2. - bridge into - Juanita/Kiteless [which has been reshuffled... the intro lyrics don't come in until 11:20 into the track]
  3. Born Slippy (Original Version)
  4. Five Points (unreleased track)
  5. Cowgirl
  6. Push Upstairs [a FOURTEEN, YES FOURTEEN MINUTE LONG VERSION, it's not until like 6 min in, that it sounds like the album version]
  7. Confusion the Waitress (with a bit of the Doors track "Riders on the Storm" played on keyboard)
  8. .NUXX (Intro)
  9. Born Slippy .NUXX
  10. Born Slippy .NUXX (Outro)

A Short Live Mix for you

I finished up with some random chores and didn't feel like working on a new drawing yesterday morning, so I decided to do a bit of mixing. I definitely am a little rusty, but it came out much better than I thought it would. It has more of a downtempo vibe with some dubstep and trip hop thrown in. I just wish I didn't have "issues" with my computer when the audio file was being saved. There was a three minute gap of silence right in the middle of the mix, so I had to cut that bit out.

Part One

The Future Sound of London - Pale Moons*

Ital Tek - Insomniac

Fever Ray - Coconut*

Nine Inch Nails - Adrift in a Warm Place (fan mix)*

Carmine & Francis Ford Coppola - The Hollow Men

Boards of Canada - Opening the Mouth

Part Two
Boxcutter - Sidereal Day

The Future Sound of London - Is This Real?

Flying Lotus - Parisian Goldfish (Take Remix)

Tricky - Abbaon Fat Track

Portishead - Strangers (Dubstep Remix)

Automator - It's Over Now [feat. Kool Keith]

Dj Shadow - What Does Your Soul Look Like? (Part 2)

Ok guys, it's Blake again...

Although this time, I don't have a preview of another shirt/print design. I decided to just post up a few more tracks I've been listening to before we head out to Lollapalooza (just waiting on Joe to get here)

most of the tracks are pretty chill...

some soundtrack stuff, a few rock-ish tracks, and (of course) a few more unreleased tracks that I've managed to get in my hands on ...

and again - I'm going to make the download be a surprise, as I'm not too sure about security/ programs searching for mp3's and whatnot

"I'm Happy, Hope You're Happy Too..."

I haven't been very active online recently, so I decided to post up two images I'm working on (it's Blake btw)

the top one started out as a quick charcoal drawing I did of an astronaut.  I kept picturing the image that you usually see of them walking in those orange jump suits before they get into the ship...  I re-drew the image in photoshop, and then started layering pictures I took of trees in Colorado in the background... which looks more like fire now.  I have made some changes between what you're seeing above and now... but I don't have the 'newest version' handy (the only real difference is some erasure in the background, which makes the trees look even less like trees than they do now, and there's more 'play' between the red & the yellow in the background)

the second image - with the child eating the woman's leg next to the polar bears began as a "part two" to my "The Story of the Unicorn" lithograph, but it's going to be a much more complex print to do (just b/c of the photographic bits I'm including).... and sure it'd be MUCH easier to do it as a digital print, but I mean... that's not really printmaking, is it?

as an added bit, here's a few tracks that... while didn't necessarily "inspire" the above images, they definitely were playing a lot while I was drawing

seeing as some of the tracks are rare & I don't want to get into trouble... I'm not going to post a tracklist - you'll just have to follow the download link

We just finished a couple of new shirts and posted them on etsy.  Blake and I make our shirts using a brand new non-toxic printmaking technique. The images are printed onto organic, carbon-neutral earth lovin' shirts from EarthPositive and they're bright and fit great! Our technique also makes it possible to get a wide color range, and the color penetrates into the fabric, unlike a screenprint, which sits on top of the fabric. Anyways, here's the photos we've taken.

Fritters

Corn and potato fritter with red peppers, green onions and garlic.

Last night Blake and I whipped up a batch of fritters and just tried to figure out how to do it as we went. They turned out very yummy and felt like a perfect summer meal.

Ingredients:
2 eggs
flour-1/4 cup plus maybe more for if the batter is too goopy
1/4 cup of milk or half and half
baking soda
a pinch of salt
4-5 cloves of garlic squished
2 yellow potatoes-grated
3 sweetcorn cobs grated
1/2 of a yellow onion-finely chopped
1/2 of a large red pepper finely chopped
3-4 green onions
cilantro
possible other spices to add- cumin, paprika, chili pepper

Topping for fritters:
2 chopped tomatoes
2 cloves of garlic
cilantro
gruyére cheese

First, beat eggs then add milk, and all other ingredients and finish with the dry ingredients. The batter should be thick and well combined. In a large frying pan with hot oil, cook the fritters by plopping the batter on the pan and cooking like pancakes...

Garnish with the tomato salad and top with cheese or sour cream
Yum.
